As the holiday season draws near, a shift in gift-giving traditions is becoming more pronounced. Would you rather receive a new scarf, possibly end up unused, or enjoy a subscription to your preferred streaming service?

For many, the choice is clear. This year’s holiday season is witnessing a surge in subscription-based gifts, especially favoured by the tech-savvy marketing and experience-seeking Millennials and Gen Z.

This trend is thoroughly explored in Recurly’s latest report, “Unwrap the Subscriptions: 2023 Holiday Trends.”

The economic climate plays a significant role in steering this transformation. A striking 81% of survey participants believe current economic conditions will influence their holiday gift choices.

Almost half of them, 49%, plan to spend less on gifts and actively look for the best deals.

Additionally, 36% opt for a more focused approach by limiting their list of gift recipients.

In this economic context, gift subscriptions are gaining prominence. An impressive 67% of respondents expressed interest in considering a gift subscription, marking a 4% increase from the 2022 Recurly holiday survey.

Gen Z and Millennials Lead the Way

This interest is exceptionally high among Millennials and Gen Z, with 73% and 70%, respectively, showing a strong inclination towards giving subscriptions as presents.

This trend is even more evident among those anticipating a substantial economic impact on holiday spending.

Of the respondents expecting a notable financial influence (comprising 46% of the total), a significant 37% expressed definite interest in giving subscriptions—a considerable increase from the overall response rate of 27%.

Regarding budget allocation for gift subscriptions, a resounding 73% of all respondents regard investing up to $100—a promise of the value they place on the subscription-based gifting experience.

Theresa McEndree, CMO at Recurly, noted, “While this holiday season may witness more cautious spending, the essence of finding that perfect gift remains unchanged.

Subscriptions have emerged as a way to provide meaningful experiences to fit tighter budgets. The rising interest in such gifts, from both givers and recipients, hints at a holiday season with fewer predictable presents and more thoughtful surprises.”

The data also sheds light on the enthusiastic reception of subscription gifts among the younger generation. An overwhelming 40% of Millennials and Gen Z respondents expressed a definite interest in receiving a gift subscription. This eagerness far surpasses that of other age groups.

When exploring the categories of subscriptions respondents would be most likely to give, gaming subscriptions took the lead, captivating the interest of 35% of respondents.

Food and beverage subscriptions closely followed at 33%, and streaming video subscriptions were also popular at 31%. Gen Z, being avid gamers, significantly fueled this preference, with nearly half (48%) expressing their inclination to present gaming subscriptions as gifts.

On the recipient side, food and beverage subscriptions remain a clear favourite at 44%. Streaming video subscriptions come close at 40%, showcasing the growing importance of streaming platforms in today’s entertainment landscape.

Gen Z’s affinity for gaming is once again evident, with 41% expressing their desire to receive gaming subscriptions, aligning with their passion for digital gaming experiences.

As we navigate this transformative trend, it’s crucial for businesses and individuals alike to adapt and tailor their gifting approach.

The traditional resistance towards digital or intangible gifts is diminishing, especially among the younger generations.

Embracing this change and considering the recipients’ preferences can make the gifting experience truly memorable.
