Writing Tips for Those Who Think They Can’t Write

Writing Tips for Those Who Think They Can’t Write

Updated - October 1, 2017 By Mallee Blue Media Leave a Comment

“Writer’s block” brings up 8.8 million search results in Google. So, the first thought that should soothe your soul when you are staring at a blank page is that you’re not alone. Tonnes of people have experienced the state of being stuck in a wordless vacuum.

A lot of them think that they just can’t write. Finding the way out is not easy. However, it’s definitely possible.

The most general, yet effective strategy is to simply start writing.

Think of something that pisses you off or makes you thrilled. Then get the thoughts onto the sheet of paper or the document. That should open the gate and make the story, you actually need to write, flow.

However, sometimes you need to go a much longer way to reach the destination point. Writing often requires preparation. It helps not just to find an inspiration tune, but also improve the final result of your work.

First, you definitely need to read. It can be anything: fiction, magazines, blogs – they all may become the source of ideas, or stir up the swirl of emotions that will be a starting point of your next piece of work.

Your next blog post will certainly get more shares and comments if it’s based on something people care about. Reading a good prose nurtures your own style and helps enhance the writing skills.

You could also try free-writing: don’t think of anything in particular. Just let the flow of consciousness turn into written text. Consider doing this in the morning: it is certain to give you a boost of creativity, that may help you last through the entire post or email you’ve got to come up with.

Author Pro

There’s a lot of creative writing exercises, so pick the one to your liking and have fun with it.

Stay away from distractions. According to some research, Americans spend around 5 hours per day socialising on different platforms.

You could probably use that time for another blog post, right? So, block all the social networks and get to business. In case overcoming Facebook addiction is just too hard, set a timer and dedicate time for work and for play. That’s sure to add to your productivity.

When the preparation is done, there’s no way back. You need to get down to work. Don’t even think that you’re going to get a perfect version from the first time.

There’s definitely going to be a field for improvement. So don’t set too high standards. Just write.

You don’t have to follow the introduction – main body – conclusion structure. Write the final first, or start from the middle. Think of your piece of writing as of a puzzle: you’ll have to move pieces, to get a vivid picture in the end.

Having finished the first draft, let it simmer a bit.

Reading your piece in a couple of days will make you look at it with fresh eyes. Then move to editing. Be ruthless, yet constructive.

Get rid of the unnecessary fluff and weak adjectives. Don’t make the reader go through your filler words and phrases: you’ll tire them sooner than they get what you’re actually talking about.

Well, basically, that’s it. You have a guide to writing pieces, that will not only help you get started but also get something really awesome as a result. So, what are you waiting for? You work is not going to be done by itself!
